About Me

My name is Melody Carr, the art teacher at Tenth Street Elementary. I came to TSE in the fall of 2014. I have wanted to be an art teacher for a long time. I was an aspiring artist at four years old, but it was my high school art teacher that inspired me to teach. It was a winding road, but I got where I wanted to be with a lot of determination and perseverance. I graduated from Anderson University in 2007 with a BA in Visual Arts Education. Shortly after graduation, I became a wife and a stepmom while I worked as a daycare teacher and children’s minister. A year after my wedding I became a mother to twin girls. I stayed at home for over a year to raise my precious babies until I decided to go back to work. I became a private school educator teaching four subjects K-12 until I finally had the opportunity to teach at Anderson Community Schools.

I love my job because I have the privilege of watching young hands make beautiful and thoughtful art, and I get to watch hundreds of curious minds grow. I love having a space where students can connect other subjects to art, explore new ideas, and discover new ways of seeing the world and making art. In the art studio, there are dreamers, explorers, problem solvers, and scientists working hard for one goal: to create something uniquely theirs. I hope to give these young artists a set of skills and confidence to make art throughout their lives, even if it is not their career path. Pablo Picasso said, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist when we grow up.”
